Communication Science Program and Central KPI Hold Research Dissemination, Discuss Infotainment Broadcast Quality
YOGYAKARTA – The Communication Science Study Program at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FISHUM), UIN Sunan Kalijaga, in collaboration with the Central Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) and the Center for Communication Studies and Training (COMTC), organized the Dissemination of the 2025 Television Broadcast Program Quality Index (IKPSTV) Research.
The event, held in the FISHUM Conference Room at UIN Sunan Kalijaga on Friday (November 14, 2025), carried the theme "Efforts to Improve the Quality of Infotainment Programs to be Informative, Educational, and Entertaining."
The event was opened with remarks from the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Prof. Noorhaidi, S.Ag., M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D. The Rector emphasized the critical role of academics in examining public issues, including broadcast quality.
"It is through research that we know exactly what is occurring, particularly regarding broadcasting quality in this republic. This stands as proof of UIN Sunan Kalijaga's commitment to responding to national issues and offering enlightenment," stated Prof. Noorhaidi.
Delivering remarks virtually were the Chairman of the Central KPI, Ubaidillah, and Keynote Speaker Dr. H. Sukamta from Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR RI).
The core session presented the results of the 2025 IKPSTV research, delivered by the Coordinator for Research and Development at the Central KPI, Andi Andrianto, M.I.Kom. The research indicated that the average quality index for infotainment programs in 2025 remains below KPI standards. Dimensions such as 'Respect for Privacy Rights' and 'Hedonistic Content' were highlighted as primary areas requiring improvement.
Central KPI Commissioner, Amin Sabana, reaffirmed KPI's commitment to supervision. "Since infotainment programs are classified as R (Remaja or Teenage), we certainly strive to protect our children and adolescents from normalizing inappropriate behaviors," Amin asserted.
Speakers from the Communication Science Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga also provided their perspectives. Dr. Bono Setyo, M.Si, Director of COMTC, presented on the importance of "Educational Infotainment" and strategies for strengthening media literacy in society. He outlined the characteristics of ideal educational programs, which should be based on data and facts rather than mere gossip, and capable of broadening the audience's insight and empathy.
Meanwhile, Alip Kunandar, M.Si, a lecturer in Communication Science, discussed the position of infotainment within the context of sensational journalism. "Infotainment in Indonesia can be categorized as sensational journalism because it prioritizes entertainment, emotion, and the personal lives of celebrities over informative value," Alip explained.
Other panelists present included the Dean of FISHUM, Prof. Dr. Erika Setyanti Kusumaputri, M.Si, who discussed the impact of broadcasts from a psychological perspective, and KPID DIY Commissioner, Arif Kurnia Rahman, M.A., who outlined the challenges of supervision at the local level.
This dissemination event, attended by students and academics, is expected to foster a broadcasting climate that is more collaborative, empathetic, and resilient in facing the digital era.
