Communication Studies Department Contributes to the Development of Communication-Based Entrepreneurship Curriculum
YOGYAKARTA – The Department of Communication Studies at UIN Sunan Kalijaga has reaffirmed its commitment to developing an entrepreneurship curriculum relevant to contemporary needs. This commitment was demonstrated through its participation in a workshop on lecturer capacity building and entrepreneurship curriculum development, organized by the Center of Entrepreneurship and Career Development (CENDI) on December 8-9, 2025, at the Amaranta Prambanan Hotel, Yogyakarta.
The event was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Istiningsih, M.Pd. , and was attended by entrepreneurship lecturers from all faculties within UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
The Department of Communication Studies sent two representatives to the workshop: Ihya' Ulumuddin, M.Sos. and Achmad Zuhri, M.I.Kom.. During the session, both lecturers actively participated in formulating a Socio-Religio-Preneurship curriculum, which integrates religious values with entrepreneurship principles relevant to the modern business world.
As part of the curriculum development, the two lecturers emphasized the importance of embedding strategic communication aspects into entrepreneurship education. According to Ihya' Ulumuddin, M.Sos., developing an entrepreneurial mindset requires not only business skills but also effective communication capabilities, particularly in building relationships and marketing products or services.
"In the business world, precise communication is the key to success," Ihya stated.
Achmad Zuhri, M.I.Kom., added that the new curriculum must instill communication skills relevant to the digital world and social media. "Students must be equipped with the ability to communicate efficiently, both orally and in writing, to face rapid technological and media developments," Zuhri explained.
The workshop resulted in several key agreements regarding curriculum development at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, including:
- The formulation of standardized Semester Learning Plans (RPS) combining entrepreneurship and communication.
- The development of courses based on Socio-Religio-Preneurship that prioritize religious values in business.
- Business incubation programs and entrepreneurship teaching certification, accompanied by training for involved lecturers.
- The integration of entrepreneurship materials into the Communication Studies curriculum to prepare students for a communication-and-technology-based business world.
Furthermore, the event discussed the roadmap for entrepreneurship education, covering expos, pitching sessions, and mentoring programs to be organized by CENDI and the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Association of Entrepreneurship Lecturers.
The delegates hope this program will provide significant benefits to Communication Studies students by creating new opportunities in an increasingly competitive business landscape. This workshop marks an initial step for the department to strengthen the role of entrepreneurship within the field of communication, which is becoming increasingly vital in the digital era. (iu)
