Sustainable Communication as a CSR Strategy to Build Public Awareness
To build public awareness and educate students on the importance of sustainable communication, the Communication Science Study Program of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta collaborated with the PRO (Public Relations Oriented) community to hold a public lecture featuring communication practitioner Dr. Indra Ardiyanto, M.I.Kom., as the Head of Communication at Great Giant Foods.
During the presentation, Dr. Indra Ardiyanto, M.I.Kom., explained that “Sustainable communication is an approach in communication that aims to support and promote sustainability practices in all aspects of life, including environmental, social, and economic.” He emphasized that sustainable communication involves all stakeholders to collectively build awareness and encourage sustainable actions. Additionally, he also discussed the relationship between sustainable communication and corporate communication strategies.
In his presentation, Dr. Indra Ardiyanto also gave an overview through a video highlighting the profile of Great Giant Foods Company, the main company of various food industry brands, including the well-known “Sunpride” product. He explained how the company prioritizes employee empowerment, community welfare in plantation areas, employee health programs and scholarships, as well as sustainability efforts across all operational areas, including the environment and economy.
The Head of the Communication Science Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Dr. Mokhamad Mahfud, S.Sos.I, M.Si., expressed his gratitude to Dr. Indra Ardiyanto, M.I.Kom., for presenting material on CSR strategies to build public awareness. He noted, “CSR reflects a company’s values of care and responsibility toward the broader community. This event is highly beneficial as it integrates and connects knowledge while aligning with the vision and mission of the Communication Science Study Program with global aspirations.”
The event was moderated by Mrs. Durotul Masudah, M.A., a lecturer in the Communication Science Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. She emphasized, “Sustainability is a crucial topic for students, particularly those aiming to work in the industrial sector or other fields. The knowledge of sustainable communication has a significant impact not only on industries but also on individuals.”
The event was also attended by lecturers from the Communication Science Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Dr. Yani Tri Wijayanti, M.Si., Maya Sandra Rosita Dewi, M.I.Kom., and Rahmah Attaymini, M.A., as well as students from the study program.
Through this event, students are expected to gain a deeper understanding of sustainable communication, reflect on its impact, and explore actionable steps they can take to apply this knowledge in all aspects of life. (rm/red)
